Update I – Supertrends in the Business of Anti-Aging

Is anti-aging technology truly a disruptive innovation? At Supertrends, we believe it is. The reasons have been thoroughly discussed in the “Supertrends in Anti-aging” dynamic report.

Citibank’s Global Perspectives and Solutions research team produced a “Disruptive Innovations VI” report in 2018. Anti-aging medicines were recommended as one of the ten disruptive areas to invest in, and a novel drug developed by Unity Biotechnology was listed as potentially the first FDA-approved senolytic medicine.¹

Almost three years have passed, but anti-aging medicine has still not seen a major business uptake. The novel drug from Unity Biotechnology failed its Phase 2 clinical trial in 2020. Therefore, this report will focus on two main questions:

• When is the best time to invest?

• What are the business opportunities in anti-aging technology?

We will answer these questions in this document by navigating the future map of anti-aging.

Some of the confusion that require clarification relate to what defines an anti-aging company. Among the various business reports on anti-aging, no two feature the same list of companies. The reason is that aging is a complex concept related to many physiological elements. Many companies involved in business or financial analysis lack scientific knowledge about aging and do not have a complete picture of innovative technology. At Supertrends, our main strength lies in mapping innovation and business opportunities driven by new technologies.

For the purposes of this document, we consider the anti-aging business to be a specialized field in biotechnology focused on increasing lifespans and healthspans for humans or animals.
